On the 8th, food tech company Armored Fresh announced that it is supplying plant-based cheese to U.S. college campuses as part of the growing market for alternative foods.
Currently, Loyola University and New Haven University are offering a variety of dishes featuring Armored Fresh cheese, such as sandwiches, sauces, and salads. The company reports that other university dining halls are also incorporating Armored Fresh cheese into their menus to meet the diverse dietary preferences of students.
According to Armored Fresh, the popularity of plant-based cheese among college students can be attributed to their interest in environmental sustainability. Plant-based cheese, made from plant-derived ingredients, serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to animal-based products. It also offers a great option for students with lactose intolerance or those following vegetarian or vegan diets.
The company notes that the exceptional taste and texture of Armored Fresh's plant-based cheese have contributed to its strong appeal. Armored Fresh cheese offers the same taste, aroma, and melting properties as animal-based cheese, setting it apart from other plant-based cheeses.
Armored Fresh has developed its own fermentation technology, for which it has received a patent. The plant-based cheese is made using a patented plant-based milk known as 'KIMICS' and follows the same production process as animal-based cheese. It is made from oat milk and uses 100% plant-based, non-GMO ingredients, making it free of cholesterol and gluten.
Rudy Yoo, CEO of Armored Fresh, stated, "Since introducing Armored Fresh plant-based cheese into university menus, we have received extremely positive feedback from students. The cheese's rich flavor and high quality have made it popular even among students who prefer traditional diets. Additionally, its versatility allows for menu expansion without limitations."
Meanwhile, the United States has a high per capita cheese consumption rate, with an average of approximately 38 pounds per person annually as of 2023. Recently, there has been a surge in popularity for alternative foods, including vegan cheese, as more consumers prioritize health and ethical considerations.
Armored Fresh plans to reflect these trends in the U.S. market and is dedicated to researching and developing sustainable alternative foods that can be enjoyed by everyone, not just vegetarians.
